Maui - Hawaii - what to see?

It will be my first time on Maui - one full day. What are the highlights of the island? How to move around? Ane public transport or rented car only? I found that not much public transport was available and had to use taxis to get around; which meant I didn't explore too much, but it is an incredible place and I would love to visit again.
