I'm hoping to take a couple of weeks and go through Mexico, Guatemala & Belize. But between work and family, it looks like I'll have to go at the end of July or beginning of August. I know this is rainy season. Will this really affect my travel? Would it be better to put off the trip until I could go at a different time? Does it rain mostly in the afternoon, or all day long?

Gale,
I went in the middle/end of June last year to Belize and Guatemala and although we had a couple of rainy days, the rain is warm and it certainly doesn't stop you from doing anything! This is rain forest anyway - I've been to Cozumel in November and April and still had rain. The only time it interferred was one day when we couldn't dive until after a lightening storm passed.
I found both Belize and Guatemala much less touristy (and cheaper) than Mexico. Depends on what you like. Within that stretch of Mexico, Isla Muejeres, which someone posted a report on yesterday, is still fairly unspoilt and Cozumel is less crowded than Cancun.
I love that region! Have a great trip!

Hi Gale,
On my last trip through Mexico during May & June it absolutely teemed down on the last section of our trip. It all depends on when the rainy season starts in June(always a little unpredictable) and therefore difficult to pinpoint when it finishes. Other places I have been it nevers rains constantly mainly rain in the late afternoon & night with a heavy downpour and fining up the next day and then building up again.
Like Eirekey says it depends on what your interests are...look on the bright side - prices drop, accommodation is plentiful and the tourist sights are not as busy.
