I'm thinking of going in February or May. Anything you know inexpensive lodging & eats, radical bookstores, coffeehouses with live poetry reading, & bars where the underground bands play would be appreciated.

Hi

Do not expect much poetry. It is gambling town. You can get a room in a motel for 25 USD. For 10 USD more you can have nice room with breakfast in one of this gambling hotels (they expect that you will spend your money in their casino downstairs). It is worth to take a walk through the bright town during the night. Orgy of lights! I did. But the next morning I rented a car and drove out to visit wonderful National Parks spread around. They could be the pride of America - not the casinos!

Enjoy!

Apart of casinos and desert, you could go to Guggenheim museum. I don't know for how long it has been working, but they have things from Hermitage and Gug. NY, so it must be interesting.

Cheers

I went to Vegas and didn't gamble a single cent. There ARE other things to do. Personally, it took me three days of constant walking to see all of the nice casinos. Theres the rollercoaster at New York New York (go at night when the lights are lit up..) plenty of bars, UNLV is cool to visit if you're into schools. Theres the chance to go to the Hoover Dam for about $35; a good tour. Theres a place called the gun store where you can shoot a fully automatic machine gun. Theres plenty of clubs if you like clubs, and of course free entertainment in casinos. Unfortunately I didn't see anyplace to catch good underground music. Theres the house of blues and the hard rock cafe for touring bands, and thats about it. Also, the monorail should be up and running along the strip now. I would recommend not going during a time when theres a convention in town; unless of course you are planning on going to the convention. Have a good time man, and if you have anymore questions get ahold of me.
