Emerald Basilisk sunbathing
Cano Negro Wildlife Reserve stretches 38 square miles from Los Chilies past the northern border with Nicaragua. The only means of transportation is by boat on the Rio Frio but this is the perfect way to enjoy the incredible variety of animals and birds that line the shores. Rosiate Spoonbills, King Fishers, Cormorants and Herons are just a few of the bigger birds that inhabit the Reserve. Five varieties of monkeys, a host of basilisks and iguanas, turtles and both 2 and 3 toes sloths are just a few of the animals roam the shores. Fisherman cast nets for shrimp or lines for bass. In an Animal Planet moment, we watch as a White Faced Capuchin Monkey daintily dropped down to the water's edge to ensnare a sun bathing Emerald Basilisk for lunch. Later a rare albino Howler Monkey was hanging upside down while picking fruit while a 3 toed sloth moved overhead in slow motion. Flowering trees of lush pinks and vibrant oranges line the shores and provide perches for the many heron and sparrows. [edit text]  [editors]
