Manuel Antonio - Monkey Portrait

Quespos manages to be a resort without being touristy. The town itself is small with none of the Senor Frogs and Hard Rock Cafes that ruin so many other beach towns. Manuel Antonio Preserve, both a wildlife refuge and a marine preserve, provides a private setting to view Costa Rica's myriad of animals, reptiles and birds. In a single hike, we saw 2 and 3 toed sloths, 2 species of toucans, iguanas, basilisks, snakes, 3 kinds of monkeys and a wild boar. The beaches within the preserve are nearly deserted, being accessible only by foot. Gone were the vendors, beach umbrellas and noise. Soft warm sands accompanied by gentle waves and the occasional offer of a coconut with a straw. Paradise!

While no construction is allowed within 1000 meters of the beach, the surrounding hillsides provide ample room for a wide range of hotels and restaurants, all with dramatic views of the coast line.
