Suez – is home to the historical Suez Canal. The idea of canal linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea went as far back as ancient times. Wanting to abandon the long route round the African continent to reach asia, Napolean’s engineer’s, around 1800AD revived the idea of a shorter trade route. Complications arose from the calculations until the famous canal digger, ie Ferdinand de Lesseps came onboard. Around 1859, work went underway and the canal was completed around 1867 and officially inaugurated around 1869. With the opening of the canal, it led to the replanning of connecting to Cairo, and that was when the idea of constructing a highway above and below the canal came about. [edit text]  [editors]
