Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam for during the 15th and 16th centuries but was ultimately sacked by the Burmese. The Burmese, looking for gold that was commonly placed in the top knots of Siamese Buddhas, erected fires over the figures to cause the cement or stucco to split. The result is row after row of burnt and headless forms.

How sad to see such wanton destruction!.

It actually was very hard to view in person. It is one thing to see destruction wrought by nature but a whole other thing to see man desecrate a religious figure. I found it painful to see.
