Bac Ha - Vietnam The small field where horses are displayed for sale. There was a lot of patting down and palpating of muscles, examining of teeth, and visual inspection of 'under-carriages' going on by the prospective buyers. While I was there, one of the local men took his tentative new purchase for a test ride. He placed a blanket and wooden saddle over the horse, then rode it first quickly down near the river, then back up the hill to the top of the ridge where the water buffalo are on displayed, then back to the river at a fast gallop, then finally back to the horse display field to remove the saddle and do further exploratory patting and probing. He then stood back at a distance of perhaps 6 feet while holding the reigns and gazed at the horse while considering his decision, as the local spectators watch on in anticipation with smiles and murmurred commentary in local tongues punctuated by chuckles amongst themselves.
