Wow! Thanks for the explanation... I am not an server expert but I am surprised - I was thinking that such a serious website like GS makes a backup of all data stored by members at least one per 24 hours...

Dissappointing...

Hello Wojciech,

we are running a backup every 7 days. While doing a backup on such a huge data amount you have to consider several parameters. For example how long it takes to create the backup and how long it takes to bring it back in. GLOBO consists of several hundred thousand files, a backup on such a complex system is not as easy as doing one for example on a home computer. For example it takes up to 6 hours of processing time to create an update while globo is in that time running on a lower speed. Of cource we could do incremental backups each day, but there it becomes extremly complex to get it all together in case of using the backup in case of damage. There are so many parameters which will be affected and different backup files in such a case that the chance of a irreperable backup will increase. The way globo handles it, has allowed it to bring globo back to live within less than 20 minutes! And with data that is 100% correct. You never know this if you do a daily incremental backup. Since in that case the backup would consist out of incremental parts. If one part failes the whole backup might be unusable. I consider this to much of a risk. We are now operating GLOBO for almost 5 years and this data loss is the first one in that long history. We never needed a backup before. This is a trade of. Of course we risk to loose up to 6 days in case of a damage, but on the other site it allowes GLOBO to run more smoothly (processor power during backup), it allows to get the backup extremly fast installed, and it is 100% reliable.

While creating the backup system we decided to go with a 7 day backup and I believe this was a good choice to make.

Best regards,

Andy
