I am debating on whether to go to Rome or Paris this March. I am only in Europe for about 8 days and have not been to either city. I enjoy site seeing, but I also want to go to a place with a decent night life and with the distance between the two I wont have time for both.

Any suggestions?

What an interesting question! They are both fantastic destinations, both well worth your time & I applaud your good sense in not trying to overdo it by trying to see too much. Looking at your profile, you haven't listed any interests so there isn't much to go on besides your age...

I'm sure you'll have a great time regardless of where you go, the key is to do a little research before and know a bit about what you want to do/see ahead of time, but also leave lots of room for serendipity. A chance encounter on a rainy Paris morning led to a day of fun and discovery with a perfect stranger when I was there last May.

Maybe because of that visit, I feel I want to say, go for Paris. A three or five-day museum pass will get you into most places you'd want to visit, and leave time for exploring the Bagatelle park and visiting nearby Versailles, and just sitting around at the sidewalk cafe watching life go by, and having deep, meaningful, silly conversations in broken English.

As for night life, someone else will have to weigh in on that since I mostly wear myself out during the day and don't have a lot of energy for nightlife when I'm traveling (although even I didn't miss the Montmartre at night, with the huge party on the steps of the floodlit Sacré-Coeur, and the Eiffel tower at night is very beautiful, too. Evening along the Siene is lovely, but risky, don't do it alone.

If you decide it's going to be Rome, write to me and I'll give you all my Rome suggestions.

Cheers,

Liz

Hi

Both cities offer a lot of interesting places to visit. But take into consideration other factor: the weather in March is much more pleasant in Rome then in Paris... Bigger chance for pleasant city walks and less risk that you will move from museum to the gallery in the rain.

Paris is nice in May and June! Come again!

Enjoy!

Hi!

can i give you my suggestion? Try Lisbon (Portugal) instead.

And why?

Because it's a marvellous city with a unique light, 2000 years of history, lot's of sightseing and an outstanding nightlife!

Not enough? Much cheaper then Rome or Paris, friendly people, and big enough to be known in one week, including some places outside Lisbon such as Sintra, Cascais, etc...

But this is only my partial opinion, since i live here, and just love this town!

If you can't make it this time, try it any other day.

Have fun

Hi Neal!

In my opinion, both are great cities to spend some days, really beautiful, interesting and both with nightlife. (Anyway the best nightlife is in Berlin, Amsterdamm and Barcelona!! ;))

But I think that all depends on if you travel alone or with a girlfriend or boyfriend.

Travelling alone I preffer Rome but with a girlfriend is better Paris (More romantic).

Just another opinion.

Dani!

What a difficult choice...and there really is no right answer as it is so subjective.

Personally, I would pick Rome. I just love their history I will never forget my first glimpse of the Colisseum plus the main sights are actually more compact so you can walk to most of them soaking up the local atmosphere along the way.

Although Danni is right, if you are after romance then I would opt for Paris.

It looks like you will just have to do 2 trips like Wojkted suggests.

Good luck.

interesting coincidence, as i was planning a similar trip this spring...only difference is i am not undecided between those two cities. Im planning on going to both, driving from Paris to Rome actually, I even have the route fully mapped out ...its 2017km's worth 2.5-3 days of driving, im planning to rent a car/minivan and do this trip in about 7-10 days with a couple of friends, visiting the small villages & cities on the way in souther france & northern italy.

Currently im researching the rental car situation, is it possible to rent a minivan from a major rental company, go through the france/italy border and drop it off in Rome once done...cause i im not planning to return to paris to drop off the car.

Any ideas or some names for some large rental companies for this would be appreciated.

We actually did this trip in reverse Rome to Paris with a 14 day car hire and including a few more countries as well.

Unfortunately 99% of car hire companies will charge a drop off fee. The one bonus you may find in paying an (exorbidant) drop off fee is that if they have a car that need's to be returned to your destination city you may score an upgrade. In our case we were due to receive a Fiat Uno matchbox car and received a top of the line Peugot. What a let down when we hit the UK and landed ourselves with a Ford Fiesta with the petrol guage not working. If it were for longer you could look into leasing a car but normally they are for a longer rental period.

Good luck.
