Hi,

I am visiting Austia (enroute Amsterdam) for the weekend on 25th and 26th. For the first time traveller in austria, which place is recommended Vienna or Salzburg.

Can anyone also please advise on possible best accomodations in both places?

Regards, Kiran

If only one possible, then Salzburg.

Both Salzburg and Vienna (aka Wien) are amazing to visit, both offering very much arty and cultural stuff and both set on beautifull rivers.

Vienna is mainly a political, corporate and banking centre and being so large, sites are quite spread apart.

Salzburg is a quaint and friendlier city, direct foothills of the Alps, has amoungst the most beautiful settings of all cities in the world!

Using the "search" function, I see that Salzburg is favoured by more members too (5 reports and 48 pictures), Vienna (22 pictures).

I have just returned from Vienna and it is a lovely city. But between Salzburg or Vienna really depends on what you like doing and how long you have.

I went to Salzburg quite a few years and don't remember too much about it, apart from visiting some of the places where the Sound of Music was filmed and the Mozart museum. But it also has some nice areas around which can be visited including the famous salt mines or ice caves.

Vienna is less known for natural beauty as it quite a big city; but if you like architecture and buildings, or shopping and visiting museums, or attending classical concerts - Vienna is fun.

See ya

Thanks for the feedback.

I spent 2 days in Vienna during 25th and 26th June. It indeed is a nice city, culturally rich and architecturally great.

I will put together some nice pictures and experiences in a report soon

hi, I think you should go to Viena, Salzburg is small and too touristic.... everything related to mozart and "the sound of music", and it has also almost everyday bad weather....

Viena is bigger and it has a lot to do and to see, (hundertwasser architecture, for example).

One other possibility is Graz, is a very beautifull city, quiet and has a lot to do, I lived there 7 months and really loved it.

Good luck in your trip!
