Hi all,

I am going to Barcelona next week. I have travelled in Spain and Portugal several times before. But never before with children. This time, however, I am travelling with my four month old son.

Where should I go, what should I do?

I have questions like:

1) What kind of bars/bistros/restaurants tend to be the most friendly for people in my situation?

2) What are standard Spanish attitudes to breastfeeding (is it acceptable in parks, in the streets, around an outdoor table, around an indoor table, etc)? (As I am Norwegian, I know that my "liberal" expectations in this area are far from global)

3) Can anyone recommend special cafes, environments, or parts of the city?

All help will be greatly appreciated!

Yours,

Halvor

Hi Halvor

I haven't been to Barcelona but I have a daughter who's now 13mt old and is still breastfed ;-)

Well our experience from our trips to italy and france were all really positive.

The best you can do is put your son in a wrap and explore as you always did before let him feed whenever he likes just try to find a calm place.

In Italy we were positively noted for carrying our little daughter around in a wrap and the people were all really friendly. I think this would be the same there. Just be natural and you will be ok.

My 2 cts

Martin

You will have a good time with your child in Barcelona!

Spanish people we love children very much. You will notice that because of your baby you will receive special attention everywhere, in the hotels, cafeterias, etc. There will always be somebody to give the seat for you in a full bus or Metro.

We have special places for children, like a shoes shop in Puerta del Angel pedestrian boulevard (in Barcelona downtown) where they sell shoes only for children, and meanwhile you are waiting there is place with games for infants. There are shops called Imaginarium, selling toys and souvenirs especially designed for children,

If you happen to be in Barcelona in December a Friday or a Saturday, go to the Plaza España (there is a Metro station called Plaza España, or Spain Square) to admire La Fuente Magica, lights and sound fountains, from 7.00 to 8.30 PM, a free of charge show that you will never forget.

You will love our zoological park and the Aquarium as well, although your child is still very small.

In places such as Maremagnum (full of shops and restaurants in the port, close to Columbus monument) there are special places to changes “pañales” (swaddling clothes) to your baby. Also in El Corte Ingles shop store there are facilities for children.

To buy clothes for your baby, go in Plaza Cataluña to well known children shop “Chicco and Prenatal”.

Enjoy Barcelona, hasta la vista!
