Tjornuvik is the northernmost village on Streymoy, the largest of the Faroe islands It has a delightful setting in a bay andthe village itself is charming, more notable for its turf roofs than for any straight lines between the houses.

It's also noteworthy for marvellous views from the road once you get beyond the bay over the very north-west of Eyrturoy, the second island in size that runs roughly parallel. Here you can see the village of Eiði and further north the sea stacks of Risin, a witch, and Killingin, a giant. This hapless pair were sent by the giants of Iceland to bring back the Faroes. They made a pig's ear of the job, splitting one mountain but not getting the islands an inch nearer to Iceland. Then they managed to get caught by the dawn - and so you can still see them - and a great sight they make. [edit text]  [editors]
