Actually it is called Višareiši, where the fourth and eighth letters are eths - which are not pronounced at all! It is at the northern end of Vidoy, one of the Faroes northen islands and is as far as you can drive from Torshavn without using a ferry.
A large mountain cirque - giving access to a ridge, prevents motor access to the tip of an island. However it's narrow enough at this point to enable easy walking to opposite coasts. The small bay facing the islands of Fugloy and Svinoy has large breakes, even in normal weather, whereas at the other side facing Kalsoy and Kunoy, it's quite placid.
The church has a valuable silver collection that includes a platter donated by the UK Government in the mid 19th century for the islanders' assistance to British mariners rescued from a wreck.
It's a fine village and the drive is no hardship. There's a choice of two places for delicious and reasonably priced coffee. [edit text][editors]
