Travel guide to Strasbourg

Strasbourg is one of the most interesting cities in France. It owes its charm partly to its position near to Germany which makes bilingualism common there and in Alsace generally. However much is owed to its own individual geography.
Strasbourg is situated on the Île river which splits into bits, making various canals and waterfalls, and then most bits join again to send the river to its nearby junction with the Rhine. It's the split in the river that gives the superb scenery of the area called Petite France, along with its half timbered houses.
The Cathedral has one of the tallest towers in France. It was started as a Romanesque building in the eleventh century but most of what you see is later and in the Gothic style. There is a marvelous astronomical clock.
At the other time extreme is the purpose-built edifice for the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. [edit text] [editors]
