Saint-Malo has been inhabited since before the Romans conquered Gaul. During the Middle Ages, it was a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance River, controlling not only the estuary but the open sea beyond. Its name is derived from a man said to have been a follower of Brendan, Saint Malo or Maclou.

Saint-Malo became notorious as the home of the corsairs, French privateers and sometimes pirates. In addition, Jacques Cartier, the man credited with the discovery of Canada, lived and sailed from Saint-Malo.

During WW2, the city's fortifications were used by German troops to deny the port to the Allies. Today it is a popular tourist destination, especially with the British. [edit text]  [editors]
