Papeete is the administrative, political and economical capital city of French Polynesia. It was built in 1890, i.e. 9 years after France took dominion on Tahiti and Moorea. In 1990, François Miterrand, then President of France came to Tahiti for the first centenary of the city and the inauguration of the brand new City-Hall. Today the population stays around 26 000 dwellers. Papeete is also the major seaport of all French Polynesia. [edit text][editors]
