Georgetown, in the eastern part of the country, is almost a forgotten place. It used to be the capital of the colonial Gambia. Many locals claim that it is an attractive town as well, with many great colonial buildings. The wonderful picture of the former capital is however flawed and based on unfounded legends rather than facts. There is anything terribly attractive in Jangjangbureh (now the official name of the place), apart from the river. It has a few sandy streets lined up with extremely simple structures, which looked like warehouses rather than households. It is so far away and one of the reasons to go there is not the doubtful architecture but fabulous setting for birdlife. [edit text][editors]
