Travel guide to Barra

Barra - a local boy sitting on a fishing boat
Barra is a small town on the northern bank of the Gambia river, right at its mouth. It is a stop-over town on the way from Dakar to Banjul and Casamance. There is no bridge over the river and Barra is linked with Banjul on the other side by car ferries and long people boats (not entirely safe, the boats). The old fort in Barra used to be a very interesting place to visit, but it has now been reclaimed by the military is off limits for tourists. Even the beach behind it is not the best place to linger without attracting too much attention from the army. Particularly in one has a big camera. A few cannons are scattered around in the area. The only decent place for refreshment is a very basic cafe in Barra Hotel, which used to have (and might still have) an Internet Cafe operating next door. [edit text]  [editors]
