Travel guide to Juffure

Museum of Slavery

Juffure is a small village at the northern bank of the Gambia River. It has been made famous by a certain author, who wrote about Kunta Kinte, a young boy, who was captured by the slave traders. The local community believed in the book so much that they now claim that it is true, and that the family of Kunta Kinte actually lives still in Juffure. UNESCO listed a small island James's Island, in the middle of the river, as a World Heritage Site, as a place directly connected to the slave trade. There is also a small, and rather poor museum, in the village. There are no facilities, so people normally come here only for a quick look and hardly anyone stays over night. Juffure is not well connected to the other side of the river and the tourist areas along the Atlantic Coast. One has can cross to the north side with public transport, but then a private car is almost always necessary to reach the villsage and the island. Some tour agents do river trips, though.
