I'm not a fan of Malarone and I really don't like Chloroquine so I am opting to take my chances. We are going to North Guatemala and hiking in the rain forest for a total of 8 days. The region shows on Malaria maps but in speaking with locals, I'm told there haven't been any actual cases.

That said, I'm spraying everything, including socks, with permethrin and taking mosquito nets and hat covers. I'm taking vitamin B complex> what else should I do?

Thanks!
Eire

Hi Eire,

I have been taking Doxycycline with great results - no side effects, no gastric problems, no malaria. It is an antibiotic, and can be acquired from any travel clinic, but you might need a prescription - some travel clinics have one on duty, and a few questions are asked and there you go. You normally take the tablets two weeks before travel, then one each day, and then four weeks after returning home. It has been recommended to me by our family doctor, who specialises in travel medicine and tropical diseases.

It is good to take some vitamins as well, as this is a strong antibiotic. One has to be careful with the sun, as one of the side effects is sunburn. Also pregnant women should avoid taking Doxycycline.

Kindest regards
Krys

hey Eire
Good health and high spirits!

I'm leaving on the 13th for Africa again and am taking Mefloquine tabs once a week. They seem to work well with the system. For outer protection I still swear by any citrus based lotion or lemon itself. Plus avon SSS works awesome. I also bring along Muskol. yes it has deet but I can have it in a spray bottle that immigration/customs may/not let it go through. 2x they have taken my bug spray!!!

I'm still a believer in long sleeve airy shirts too. I don't think there is really a difference if you spray your body with deet or your clothes with some other chemical. Your only going 6days I don't think 6days of deet will do any damage.

have fun on your trip.
p.s. Is the Volcano that erupted there going to cause any grief for you?

Thanks Krys and Ta-shy!

I am hoping that the volcano eruption will not be an issue - flights into Guatemala City resumed on Saturday. The ash from this volcano is much heavier and falls quickly tot he ground. Scary thing is that we were actually up on Pacaya 7 months ago. We hiked up on to the flows at sunset and the whole experience was really amazing.

I am taking lightweight long sleeve shirts and have an appt at the Travel clinic this afternoon!
