Could anyone advise on the road transport in Uzbekistan?

I am planning to travel from Urgench to Khiva (short distance - 30km, so probably taxi straight from the airport), from Tashkent to Samarkand and onto to Shakhrisabz and farther to Bukhara, and from Tashkent to Turkestan via Shymkent over in Kazakhstan.

Any advice really appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi,

I went to Uzbekistan a year ago. It was very easy to organise road transport actually. All private cars (almost) work as taxis as the local population is happy to earn an extra buck. And in cities is exactly one buck...

Then, I used taxis where I could find them. They were cheap, however I enquired from locals how much I should pay. As soon as I made it clear to the drivers that locals told me what the price should be, they did not argue. I ended up not taking any other forms of public transport, apart from railways and flights.

Russian in essential in places outside Tashkent, and even in Tashkent, local drivers do not speak any English. In more rural places, like Khiva, even Russian is hard to find. An odd person speaks French, for some reason.

I have written a few reports and travel logs from this trip, by the way. I also recommended a travel agent (look inside the travel tips for Uzbekistan), who would be able to advise and offer assistance.

All the best.
