Water Bottles: are they allowed on airplanes these days?

whereisliz Joined: Oct 03 Points: 8654 Posts: 164 Posted: 2007-02-22 23:10:00    I've been getting some conflicting advice about water bottles... with all the new attention regarding liquids on airplanes, I'm pretty sure they frown upon people trying to bring full water bottles through security checkpoints these days. But I was surprised to hear that at least one traveler I know reports no problems at all taking her (empty) Nalgene bottle on board in her carry-on (which she can then re-fill before boarding the plane). I'd love to get a consensus among those of you who have traveled in the last 6 months... have you tried to take an empty water bottle on board a plane, and have you been successful? They prefer you to check-in as much as possible anyway, cabin space limited and my experience shows if they are anyway in doubt or suspicious, we just can't win. (I have had quite a few things confiscated over time; cigarette lighters, swiss knife, scissors, also a 2kg ore sample!) Since most airports, airlines and destinations follow different rules and standards, I am sure there is no fixed rule about water-bottles and would email or fax the concerned airline (and carry a printout of the answer with me) if necessary. I find that standards also differe according to shifts and supervisors, day-to-day I suppose! Well, I can tell you from my experience this past Dec. on Air Canada. You CANNOT take any liquids with you through security. However, you can buy water once you get past security and bring that on the plane. If you are changing flights though and you want to keep your water bottle, you MUST take it on board empty if you have to pass security again. Also, you CANNOT bring any liquids in a bottle more than 100ml. I brought like 1" of hairspray in a bottle, hardly anything, it was confiscated.
