Some logs were buried by sediment before they could decompose. Tons of volcano ash were carried by the winds into the area where it was incorporated into the layers of sediment. Ground water dissolved silica from the volcanic ash and carried it through the logs. That is how the trees were petrified.

That's funny - besides San Antonio the Petrified Forest was also on my trip many years ago... We stayed in the youth hostel of Holbrook, nice experience. :)
