The exquisite beauty of the Berchtesgaden region is well known in Germany but tends to be less so outside. In particular many visitors to the wonderful city of Salzburg in Austria have no thoughts of crossing the border to visit this nearby village. Its name is well enough known to many for the wrong reasons but the shoertest of visits will have you htinking of the splendid scenery of the Bavarian Alps, rather than of history.
The village itself is charming enough but there are two special claims to fame. One is the salt mine [see the travel tip on this] and the other is the Kongsee, one of the less sung Alpine Lakes but quite spectacular. A boat trip on the lake is highly recommended. [edit text][editors]
