Dachau is a satellite city of Munich, 20km north-west of the Bavarian capital. Set on a hill on a very vast plain, there is evidence that stoneage man settled here. Around 1000AC the Celtics originating near Salzburg gave it its name "Dahauua" meaning meadows of clay. The city developed well, being on the salt route between Salzburg and central Europe.
The city has a bad name for the nearby concentration camp built by the Nazis which is now now a national memorial site visited by about 800000 tourists per year. [edit text][editors]
