Cologne is Germany's oldest major city, dating back to when the Romans founded 'Colonia' byt the banks of the river Rhine. Today it is the countries 4th largest city with just over 1 million citizens.
Cologne is famous for its enormous gothic cathedral, the Dom, its twin spires dominate the skyline. Every December one of Germany's most popular Christmas markets takes place right next to it.
Cologne is a fun place to visit at any time of year, the cultural program is first class, the museums and galleries world renowned, there are over 3000 pubs & restaurants and the people are friendly and well known for their openess and sense of humour. The best time, however, is to come and visit during Cologne's 'fifth' season - Carnival. The season starts on the 11.11. and culminates in a week long celebration before Ash Wednesday.
And don't worry if you have problems understanding the locals, here they don't just drink Koelsch (the local beer) - they speak it too! [edit text][editors]
