Gießen is a university town on the banks of the river Lahn in the German state of Hesse, about 50 km north of Frankfurt. The town dates back to 1152 and today has about 71,000 inhabitants. The Justus-Liebig-University was founded in 1607 and now has approx. 22,000 students.
In WWII around 75% of the town centre was destroyed by bombings, but a few historical buildings survived, noatably the Old and New Castle (Altes und Neues Schloß), the Arsenal (Zeughaus) and the bell tower of the town church. Also worth a visit are the Mathematikum and Justus-Liebig-Museum and one of the oldest Botanical Gardens in Germany. [edit text]  [editors]
