On a former Rhine island Kaiserswerth the oldest part of Duesseldorf is situated. In 700 Suitbert built a Benedictan monastery. In 1045 the Kaiserpfalz was foun-ded, a port of clearance (1174), an imperial free city (1181), the archbishop' of Cologne (1397) strongest fortress along the Rhine. From then on it is kidnapping (Henry IV., 1062), place for political prisoners (13th c.), sieges in the 16th, 17th (Thirty Years' War), 18th centuries (Spanish war of succession), until town and Kaiserpfalz were lying in ruins. But: Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld fought witch hunting, 1654 a Capuchin monastery was founded, 1717 the romanesque basilica St. Suitbert was rebuilt.The Palatinate allowed the protestants to come back (18th c.), who built churches, textile factories. The Diakonie Kaiserswerth educated poor women, and also F.Nightingal (19th c.). -
