[QUOTE ANDY] Is the term "network" internationally known and do the people on GLOBOsapiens get the meaning? What is a network? Is the term commonly known or would it need explanation. What's the opinion of the english native speakers on that. Network, or Friends?[END QUOTE]

[QUOTE RUDI] This is wonderful but have we considered the new word "network" instead of "friendship"? We members have rarely met each other! In Europe and most the world friends are very very close. In the USA less, they call friends anyone that they have met before! On the web now one has a "network" (friends) and a "blog"(weblog/travellog)![END QUOTE]

Although 'network 'is a good word, it is too much connected with business, earning money, getting a better postition. This is not what Globo is about. That's why I like 'travel community' better than 'travel network'.

The question Andy asks is; should we use 'friends' or 'network'

In my opinion network sounds very detached, whereas friends sounds warm and friendly. Friends may be too general (as Rudi says). My suggestion is: travel friends and travel community

As usual for me after a lot of detailed analysis i think we might forget about names and just get on with the enjoyment of life in action.

We used make jam (jelly?) at in the 1950s when food was scarce. It was better than ever you could buy in shops annd it never had a label!!!

Hugh, I can see your point but I think Andy likes some suggestions and feedback for the content of Globo

Well then, I suppose either "community friends" or "community network" would be acceptable. Other ideas? Friends do not have to have met before, example the term "pen friend" is internationally well known. I just find "network" more modern for this and the next generation specially. RR

I think the general meaning of friends is good but I think it's better to use a synonyme. Here the list of synoymes found on thesaurus.com

acquaintance, ally, alter ego, amigo, associate, bedfellow, blocker, boon companion, bosom buddy*, brother, buddy, chum*, classmate, cohort, colleague, companion*, compatriot, comrade, confrere, consort, countryman, cousin, crony, familiar, fellow, intimate, kissing cousin, little brother, main man, main squeeze, mate, other self, pal, partner, playmate, roommate, schoolmate, sidekick, sister, soul mate*, spare*, well-wisher

I like: buddy, fellow or mate

They are both really informal and this is what joins us here.

This would perhaps help to reduce the romance seekers...

Personally, I wouldn't change either 'community' or 'friends'.

I don't think either one is outdated or inappropriate.

How right you are my friend. Community has become even more important in recent times as old divisions are eroded as in Northern Ireland. In Ireland the term community has many positive vibes of cooperation and warm friendships.

Hello everybody,

thank you for your feedback. To sum it up I believe we can stay with "Community" and "Friends". Let's concentrate on growing it instead of finding new names for the "marmalade" like horourke would say :-)

Regards,

andy
