Hello everybody,

as you might have already seen, there is a relative huge amount of spam comming in from new members that post on peru. It is not possible to stop this by creating automatic functions. Those are humans, sitting mainly in India that do promote other sites for money. I am now thinking about converting the registration to "invitation only" memberships. What do you think? This would solve the problem and make GLOBO somehow more exclusive.

Thank you for any feedback on this.

Best regards, Andy

I think it will not be of long-term benefit to restrict access to invitation only. The more available a technology / facility is, the greater growth and development it will experience. Two examples of this were the (1) VHS video recording system which took over the market instead of the more technically endowed competitor which restricted its licensing policy and (2) google mail which began with an invitation only policy and is now freely available.

I feel that moderation and deletion of irrelevant material would be preferable.
As a user of the site I think the spam input is always obvious and can be easily skipped. I am not sure it is of any significance to users.

I agree with Hugh. I first stumbled across Globo while looking for information on Puerto Maldonado, Peru. That was in 2003. If Registration was by invitation only, how would I have joined?

I hate the spammers, especially the "Love" notes, and I'm not sure how we get around that, but restricting Membership may not be the answer.

Is there a way to limit access to report writing until after a member has a certain number of points?

I absolutely agree with Hugh and Eire. Many very interesting Globies wouldn't be here if they had needed an invitation.

Everyone, seems to have made a valid point. I can't even remember how I stumbled across this site, but like Eire I would have never joined and you never know when that new member is going to be gem or just a spammer.

We want more members around here, contributing good stuff. Now that would be good if some how we could get newbies contributining.

I know you have a lot of filters in place but is there anything we can do to assist, as we all hate these spammers?

Hello everybody,

I would like to pick up this discussion again. The problem still exists and seems not to go away by just deleting those accounts. Even worse, they started to post links into new profiles instead of reports as they obviously found that those will not get deleted so fast. It seems also impossible to find an automated way of blocking those spammers. I am trying to find a pattern (something that they all have in common), but there is none. Those are real people, not machines.

One solution could be to block all accounts that post a link that we have on a black list. They seem to do those postings for clients and as one can imagine clients adresses are not infinitive. However, they seem to have just to many sites. It is hard to believe, but look for yourself.

Here is the actual list I collected:

http://www.amarujourneyperu.com/
http://www.amazontrailsperu.net/
http://www.culturalandadventuretravel.com/
'http://www.cuscomaravilla.com
http://www.cuscomaravilla.com/
http://www.cuscoperuflamencotravel.com/
http://www.exciting-peru.com/
http://www.flamencotravel.com/
http://www.hostalescuscoperuelmariscal.com
http://www.incajungletrail.com
http://www.incajungletrail.com/
http://www.incajungl-etrail.com/
http://www.incamacuscohostel.com
http://www.inkachallengeperu.com
http://www.inkaquest.com/
http://www.inkatrail-tomachupicchu.com
http://www.latikaincatrail.com/
http://www.palotoatoursperu.com
http://www.peruadventuretrek.com/
http://www.perumachupicchu.com
http://www.salkantay-treks.com
http://www.skyperu.com
http://www.skyperu.com/
http://www.southamerica-peru.com
http://www.trebolexpeditions.com
http://www.walkerperu.net

Some of them are the same, but very view. I could also block accounts that paste a link which has the word "peru" inside or similar. Problem with that is, that real accounts could be affected as well. Another solution could be to remove all links posted by members that have less then lets say 1000 points without saying anything. What do you think?

Any ideas on how to get that problem solved are greatly apreciated.

Kind regards, Andy

Hi Andy
I think that the best option here would be to remove links of members with less than 1000 points.

As for the love notes the wording nearly always seems to be 'distance or color doesn't matter but love matters a lot in life' or words to that effect and it is not only the members in the top ranking who are sent this type of message as you already know.

All the best
Fred.

I, like several other members, have been in touch with other Globies that I 'stumbled' upon on joining Globo, one or two have become real friends, do not let a few brain dead people spoil a brilliant concept, Many Regards, Tony.

Hello All,

In short, I would not be happy with 'invitation-only' membership for Globo. However, I am enormously annoyed with the spam; love letters and the Peru- related.

If I could suggest something:
- suspend a new member automatically, if certain words are entered like 'love', etc or when hyperlinks or emails are entered
- only premium members and members with an excess of 1000 points or active for longer than six months allowed to post hyperlinks
- delete all hyperlinks from members, who are not premium, have less than 1000 points or active for less than six months

Kind regards
Krys

Hi
I think it's not good to join by invitation
but you can make the privacy higher, for ignoring bothering emails or putting unwanted people in the blacklist
