K, I have a problem.. Before I entered a story written by someone else.. I gave credit where credit is due to the author.. It was mentioned that I post a few lines and then direct the readers to the site where I got it.. Well, I did that and also tried to direct a member to a couple of sites where he could read some information on a country he was planning on visiting.. This is what came up.

" You have entered a restricted website address.

Please understand that we can not allow links to this company. You are welcome to contact this member, but please don't point members to websites of competitors."

So let me get this straight. If any other site has useful information, No globosapien is able to access it at all?? I think that is very unfair.. If Globospians is to be a successfull website, then it should be able to hold it's own and not be afraid that some members might also be members of other travel sites!! I think it's a shame that I cannot give a globosapien some very useful information from another place.

I dont see the problem. GLOBO should not promote or even have links to other similar competing sites. Members are not banned in any way from visiting those, just not directly, cross-links dont make sense!

- CocaCola will not have links on its website to Pepsi

- a moshee/temple will not display leaflets for a church

- a ski resort will not advertise the neighbours

- Lonely Planet, Dumont, Marco Polo will never quote another

- neither other sport or recreational clubs, neither any other societies or communities...

Also, GLOBO is mainly about OUR own (first degree) travel experiences and pictures, not usualy those of others. Communities grow individually and the best are unique, that is why I choose GLOBO!

all in all that is correct, but if someone on this site is looking for information that they obviously can't find on Globo.. I don't see any problem with directing them elsewhere..

for example: a member on globo mentioned wanting to visit an island country but wanted to know "must sees" and other pertinent information they would need.

I was browsing another travel site when I came across a blurb from someone who has just returned from the same country and they had excellent information that our Globo member was looking for..

What is the problem with me directing them to the site where the info is?? I obviously can't just cut and paste and give credit to the author because I found that is considered a no-no here in globo land.

read "I have a travel story I just have to share.." in the forum travel writing and you will see what I mean.

Hi Ta-Shy,

basicly this is more a problem of spamers. Of course rangutan has also a point but this is not the reason for this system.

I am not sure if you have noticed the incident a few weeks ago when someone from VT (meber, or just "fan", or what ever) came across GLOBO, signed up and flooded the forum and other areas with VT advertisement in a really bad way. We had this before, that members signed up and the only thing they did, is to place a link to VT telling.."read about my journeys on VT". Of course this is not what GLOBO wants. So preventing them to spam or only point to competitors, there has to be a system which checks this. And this is exactly what you have found on GLOBO.

Before you enter info on GLOBO there are several checks your text will pass. Spam, recuring text, bad words, this links etc. Thanx to that system GLOBO is mostly free of anoing advertisement and certain "languages".

Of course there are downsides of the system like the one you mentioned, but I see this system as extremly important, since I believe it is of benefit that people on GLOBO do not get harased, disturbed, anoid and thrown at with dirty words.

Best regards,

Andy

Tashi

There's an easy way around this if you don't mind supplying your own e-mail address to the person you want to help. Just send a private message supplying your address and ask them to contact you there for information. Most ISPs provide a mechanism for blocking anyone who becomes a menace - but I've never had to use it yet and I've given my address on a number of different sites.

This way you can fulfill your friendly objective without clashing with that of Andy, Which surely has to be accepted as correct.

Cheers, David
