This might "just" be another case of kidnapping by amateurs trying to make a quick buck. Other than Colombia, I did not know there was such a higher risk in S.America recently! There are a LOT of tourists in the region who will be asked to look out for them or asked about recent sightings. In most countries travelers and tourists are respected for the support they give to the local economies, im sure the local authorities are doing there best as not to frighten off tourism.
