The Island of Carriacou is located north-east of Grenada. It’s a tiny, hilly island of 8,000 residents where the main road, Main Street, cuts across the runway of Lauriston Airport. The road has to be closed when aircraft are landing and can only be reached by light aircraft from the mainland or via the port. Main Street runs parallel to the coast, and it is a short drive to the centre of town.
The town of Hillsborough is the heart of Carriacou, having most of the banks, official buildings, shops and the only police station. The pace of life is slow, and for tourists this centres around the beaches and Yacht club.
There is a mix of African and Scottish ancestry and local traditions reflect this mixed heritage, with the African Big Drum Nation Dance and the European Quadrille festivals. [edit text][editors]
