Guyana gained independence from the UK in 1966 and has a mix of 51% East Indian, 43% Afro-Guyanese, 4% Amerindian and 2% European & Chinese. It has a population of 825k with nearly a ¼ of them living in Georgetown. It's sandwiched between Venezuela, Brazil and Suriname; and is around the size of the UK. It is the only English speaking South American country and its main attraction is Kaieteur Falls. The main industries surrounds the production of Bauxite which is used to manufacture Aluminium, gold and diamonds.
The airport is 26 miles from Georgetown, the capital and the only city in the country; which is situated on the banks of the Demerara River that flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
Georgetown is great city, you have the feeling that you’ve stepped back in time when you walk the streets; most impressive buildings are made of wood, and even some of the hotels have the added character of being wooden. This is in contrast to popular tourist destinations. [edit text][editors]
