In Icelandic the word is spelt as Žingvellir, which is made up of two elements, ping which literally means parliament and vellir which means meadows. This was the spot that Iceland formed the first parliamentary democracy; as a result it is one of the 851 world heritage sites.
As with all Iceland's natural sites, it is free to enter the National Park and it is a very beautiful area and is located where the geological tectonic plates of Europe and America collide and creates a fault line and it is said that it is here where the parliament was held way back when and continued annually until the 1789, when what makes Iceland Island (Icelandic for Iceland)occurred. There was an earthquake so the meetings were moved to Reykjavik. [edit text][editors]
