Vik is a wonderful little village around 190km from Reykjavik and probably the second largest village on the Route 1 (the main circular highway) heading south from the capital. It provides a lovely rest bite from the miles and miles of open road. There are is a lovely little church on the hillside in the picturesque setting. It sits below a snow capped active volcano, which apparently due for an eruption and it is said that the church may well be the only surviving building if this happens as a flash floods could wash the village away.

But it is also known as the wettest place in Iceland and only has 300 inhabitants. But it is through this village that you access Mýrdalsjökull Glacier. [edit text]  [editors]
