Around 400km from Reykjavik is this wonderful place found along the south coast that exists owing to Europe's largest glacier - the Vatnajokull. It can visited as part of a day tour from the capital, but it takes 14 hours as you visit a few other sites along the way. The best way to visit is by renting a car or taking a bus as you travel around the island.
Up until 1950 the lagoon/lake was part of a glacial river Jokulsa and it flowed uninterrupted to the sea. Now the glacier is retreating and the lagoon was formed and it is continually getting larger each season. Every now and then you can hear a huge crash then splash as even more pieces of ice breaks off forming icebergs that floats in the lagoon ever so slowly making their ways down the river. Salmon, herring and other fish swim upstream from the sea and sometimes you can see seals and ducks there. [edit text][editors]
