Travel guide to Margao

Margao, also known as Madgaon, is Goa's second largest commercial centre and an important transport hub. Most travellers hurry away as soon as possible to Colva and the beaches, only 30 mins away.

Margao doesn't abound in tourist attractions but its bustling streets are truly Indian and an eye opener for anyone who has spent too many days on the beaches.

The many 18th century houses along Abade Faria Road (leading to the bus station) are worth a closer look. They were built by the Portuguese, have tiled roofs and wooden verandas.

The baroque Church of the Holy Spirit dominates the Old market Square and is surrounded by a number of Portuguese-style house.

The Government bus stand is 2 km north along the road to Panjim (Goa's capital city). All buses in southern and western direction pass along the church and Abade Faria Road, and offer 'free' sight seeing.

The Konkan Railway Station is 4 km to the south of the city centre and serves all stations between Mumbai and Trivandrum. [edit text] [editors]
