Thiruvananthapuram is the southern most district in Kerala, and is undoubtedly the gateway to God’s Own Country. This is the place used to be known as Thiruvithancore (Travancore as the British called it) and is one of the three princely states – the other two being Kochi and Malabar which were integrated to form the present state of Kerala on November the 1st, 1956. The capital city, Thiruvanathapuram, of Travancore, deservedly was chosen as the capital of newly formed state of Kerala at the time of integration. Flanked by Western Ghats in the east and 78 kms of flat coastal strip in the west, this beautiful land is a veritable paradise for the tourists. The wooded highlands of Western ghats are dotted with excellent picnic spots. The long shoreline is peppered with silvery beaches of international repute including the world famous ‘Kovalam Beach’. The backwater stretches of this district too are very very impressive. All in all a wonderful place to visit!! [edit text][editors]
