The charming village of Pokaran,which translates to "the place of five mirages", sits midway between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer in the Thar Desert, along the Silk Route. It is surrounded on either side by sand dunes and rocky hills. The village itself is built around a 14th century red sandstone fort, Balagarh, that conjures up visions of yore. The Fort, currently in the midst of restoration, is now a heritage hotel. Displays in several hallways feature the minature paintings that Rajashtan is famed for, well beautiful frescoes greet you at several entrances. There are also ancient Mewar weapons and suits of 14th century armour. Walk along the ramparts to take in a view of the harsh desert countryside. Before you leave, sit under the fans in the elegant dining room and sip a cool limade under the gaze of the Maharanis of the past whose portraits line the walls. [edit text]  [editors]
