Bada Bagh Cenotaphs

Jaisalmer was one of the last stops in India along the Silk Road. Sonar Kila, literally Golden Fort, sits atop a hill overlooking the city and is one of the few remaining living forts - people still live, work and trade within its walls. Called the Golden City, the fort is surrounded by 2nd through 10th century havelis (palaces) that are trully architectural marvels! Beautifully carved sandstone balconies and lacey screens adorn the exteriors while the paint work inside is a delightful, almost baroque, mixture of Asian, Persian and European influences. Belguim glass mosaics and ceiling panels complete the effect.

A camel ride over the dunes gives a feel to the trader's adventure. Watch as villagers travel from far and near, bringing their wares to market in camel caravans. Listen to the music and songs of gypsys ~ they will offer to dance for you as the sun gently sets over the dunes. A word of caution though-opt for the shorter camel ride!
