Varanasi, (Kashi - the city of spiritual light) is one of the oldest cities in India.
This city is located on the banks of the holy Ganga and is one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations of India.It is one of the 7 holy cities in Hindu scripture. An eternal city with a vibrant past and over 3000 years of continuous habitation. It is said there are thirty-three hundred million shrines and half a million images of the deities in Kashi. This is also the most favoured place for Hindus to die and be cremated.
Few standing buildings are older than the 16th century. This city has been raided by several Muslim armies from the 11th century onwards and thousands of temples have been destroyed. Kashi, however, still has hundreds of ancient beautiful temples.
Ghats, Alleys along the ghats, High Banks, The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Bharat Mata Temple, Tulsi Manas Temple, and the Bharat Kala Museum are major attractions. [edit text][editors]
