Galway travel tips

Galway Walking Tours
Galway Tours provide a great friendly tour of Galway City. Our guide Ray was really funny and also interesting. at the end he gave us great tips about where to go for the best live music in the City more

Galway City Pub Guide
A good site to check out to get a feel of what the Pub scene is in Galway. There are reviews, photos, videos and maps as well . people are also free to upload their views and photos you can buy merchandise from the pubs such as hoodies and t shirts. also more

The Nora Barnacle House
This museum was the home of Nora Barnacle, wife of the famous Irish writer James Joyce. It gives a glimpse into how ordinary Irish people lived in those days. There is some interesting material on display relating to Nora and James Joyce. Best of all I liked to see the house itself. It so very small and I could hardly believe that a whole family lived here. The peat fire smouldered in the open hearth and its distinctive smell spread through the cottage. more

Lynch Castle
Lynch Castle is at the corner of Upper Abbeygate Street and Shop Street (Galway's main pedestrianised shopping street). It is strange to see a castle in between houses. The castle dates back to the 16th century but has been the A.I.E bank since 1966. The castle was home to the Lynch family, an important family who supplied the city with more than 80 mayors between the 15th and 17th centuries The exterior looks very sturdy. Gargoyles and the arms of Henry VII are details to look out for. The doors are not original but date back to 1930s. Inside is a series of panels telling the story of the castle. more

Ardla Bed & Breakfast
Ardla Bed & Breakfast has very comfortable rooms, and all are ensuite. We had a twin room which had one single bed and one double bed. The beds take up most of the space and therefore there is little room to move about. It is a very sunny room because of its wide window. Breakfast is served from 8 am, and consists of a full Irish breakfast. Gratton Court is a cul-the-sac and therefore very quiet. There is ample space to park a car. It is in the Claddagh district, 30-min walk from the train and bus station. We booked through the Tourist Office near the train station. They charge €4 booking fee. In July and August this is a good thing to do as many hotels and B&B's will be booked. Father Griffin Road has lots of B&B's and in June most of them had vacancies. The advantage of booking through the Tourist officed is that the only recommend approved B&B's for which standards apply. This way you are sure that the accommodation is up to standard. more

Kenny's Bookshop
Kenny's Bookshop is a true paradise. It is an excellent place to spend a rainy day and by the time the rains stops you will not have seen even half of the collection. I found here many books of Irish interests which I had never seen before and just could tear myself away. It is worth making a detour for it. more
