Clifden or An Clochán in Irish is a small town nestling above an inlet of Ardbear Bay, with views of the Atlantic. It is considered to be Connemara's capital. The main street is lined with colourful shops and pubs many with live music in the evening. There are two ATM's and internet access.
It is a good base for exploring Connemara; Maam Cross, Leenaune and Killary harbour, Kylemore and Inagh valley. It is an angling centre for salmon and trout. The Connemara Pony Show is held in the town each August and includes an exhibition of Irish arts and crafts.
The Beach Road is a peaceful walk down to Clifden harbour. From here a good view of Clifden town and its two church spires. At the boat club head for the Sky Road and walk back to town.
The Skyroad is an 11-kilomtere drive west of Clifden along the Bay, high up the cliff and rsies more than 150 m above sea level. The views are spectacular; the the Atlantic and nearby small islands. [edit text][editors]
