Travel guide to Caltabellotta

A rooftop view

Caltabellotta is a hilltop village reachable by bus from Sciacca in southern Sicily. ‘Hilltop’ is almost literal here as the village pushes up so that only a small crag goes above it. From below you get the impression that you are going to get a fine view after a great ride from a rather uninteresting village. Only the last part is wrong.
The construction of the top part of the village is fascinating, the way that any wastage of space is rigorously avoided. The top of the village follows a ridge and at one point there is a tunnel below the very top, a very short distance little more than a bridge. Yet it can feel like passing from the Equator to the Arctic! Not only the weather changes. You go from a delightful coastal view to an equally fine view of part of the mountainous and bleak interior. At the eastern end of the ridge is the 16th C Hermitage of San Pellegrino and a splendid rooftop view of the village below.
