Towards the Gran Sasso
L'Áquila is the capital of one of Italy's less known provinces, Abruzzo. the old city is full of fine buildings and its arcades and morning market are extremely pleasing.
Three buildings are of particular interest. The castle, with a fine drawbridge over the [waterless now] moat contains a museum and is not only interesting in itself but provides a superb view towards the Gran Sasso d'Italia, highest Italian mountain south of the Alps.
The other two are churches. The church of S.Maria di Collemaggio dates from the 13th century and has a beautiful white and pink façade whist S. Bernardino da Siena is a Renaissance gem.
The other well known feature of the city is the Fountain of 99 spouts.
