Monreale

Monreale is only a short bus ride from Palermo [starts near the Castle of the Normans]. It’s a pleasant enough ride but the objective is the Basilica at Monreale. Reading about this, here or elsewhere, must suggest hype. A quote from the Rough Guide: ‘The most extraordinary and extensive area of Christian medieval mosaic work in the world, the apex of Sicilian-Norman art.’ However this is NOT hype. The truth is that you rapidly run out of superlatives to give any impression of its quality.
The mosaics are believed to have been completed in only a single decade in the twelfth century.
The top of the nave is decorated with a frieze of mosaics all round, which show the Old Testament stories, starting with the Creation. To most the pièce de resistance is the head of Christ in the central apse, over 20 metres in height.
