Siracusa is a city to the southeast of Sicily. There are buses direct from the airport at Catania.
The two main areas shouting to be seen are the old town of Ortygia, across a bridge onto what is technically a separate island, and the Archaeological Park higher up. There is also an archaeological museum said to be outstanding.
The downside of Ortygia is that you can’t get to the point of the island, which is used by the army. However there is much of interest, including the cathedral where the interior is more striking than the outside, with vast Norman type pillars.
The Archaeological Park is an absolute knockout. Its three principle sights are the very large Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, used entirely for gladiatorial combats and showing clearly where men and creatures entered and the quarries of Paradiso [which doubtless seemed like the opposite to the slaves who worked there.
They include a large cave, the Ear of Dionysus. [edit text][editors]
