The island of Miyajima is located 30 minutes from Hiroshima Station and then a 10-minute ferry ride. If you have a JR Pass no additional fares are incurred.
Originally named Itsukushima, the island is popularly called Miyajima or Shrine Island. It is home to two World Heritage Sites and that is the Itsukushima Shrine and the O-toril Gate, which are amazing to see.
The island is said to be very sacred and no one is allowed to die there, so if death is imminent they are taken to the mainland.
It is a wonderful place to explore and spending the entire day is time well spent. Other sights include the 5 storey pagoda - Gojunoto and the huge wooden Senjokaku (or Toyokuni Shrine), an enjoyable cable car ride up to the top of Mt Misen. [edit text][editors]
